At Keshet, we aim to be your dog’s home away from home. The health and wellness of our canine residents is paramount, and we believe in the importance of letting dogs be dogs. We offer lots of outside time, play and amenities to keep them active and occupied. However, we are prudent to the fact that issues may occasionally arise while dogs are in our care. These issues may, at times, be compounded by environmental conditions, health or behavioural changes, facility capacity, or simply because they are in an unfamiliar setting.

We have compiled a collection of information detailing our process for dealing with common issues. Please keep in mind that the course of action we take may be situational. Read on to find out how we work hard to prevent and remedy any issues that arise in our day-to-day operations.

The following information is a guide to our best practices.

Kennel Cough

Bordetella, also known as Kennel Cough, is a vaccine we require dogs to have before coming to Keshet Kennels. Even though a dog is vaccinated, however, similar to the flu shot, it doesn't mean one can't get it. Even if there is no coughing at the kennel, there is an incubation period of anywhere from 3-10 days. So it is very difficult to pin point who and when the kennel is exposed.

For this reason, Kennel Cough is a silent enemy of a kennel.

Kennel cough, also known by its scientific name, Bordetella bronchiseptica, is a bacterial illness. ... Because of this, boarding services require a Bordetella vaccination before your pooch can spend the night.

What precautions can you take to help protect your dog against Kennel Cough?

For those of you concerned about upcoming bookings, it may be worthwhile to vaccinate your dog for kennel cough at least 10 days prior to drop off, especially if the last vaccination was more than 6 months ago.

The Kennel Cough vaccine can be oral, nasal or given as an injectable. The oral and nasal options are absorbed into the body quicker than an injectable.

What precuations are taken at the kennel once symptoms are exhibited ?

We do our very best to follow protocol to contain and eradicate the virus, not the least of which includes washing hands and equipment before moving between dogs and eliminating interactions between dogs.

Affected dogs are immediately quarantined and restricted to certain areas. However, as the incubation period for kennel cough is anywhere between 3-10 days, it makes it extremely difficult to identify carriers. Dogs that show symptoms shortly after arriving at Keshet Kennels are likely to have contracted the virus elsewhere. In fact a dog can come stay a few days and leave without ever showing symptoms, yet be highly contagious while here. Therefore, although implementing a stringent series of protocols will reduce the risks, it will never eliminate the risk.

What types of dogs do you rescue/adopt?

Our ability to rescue dogs is dependent on the available resources at the time.

Typically we rescue dogs which are surrendered by their owners. These dogs have been in loving homes and due to circumstances are forced to be given up. Under certain circumstances we take dogs from other sources; if the risk of them being euthanized is high.

For additional information, please check out our Rescue & Adoption page.

Do people just drop off their dogs?

No. There is a clearly defined process which ensures the safety of our staff and canine residents. The process starts by contacting us to identify that you have a dog that needs rescuing.

To inquire about surrendering a dog, please send an e-mail with information about the dog and a summary of the circumstances to rescue@keshetkennels.com or call 613-850-6212.

Do you place any of your dogs?

Yes. However, there is a clearly defined process which ensures the safety of the individual(s) rescuing the dog and the well being of the dog being placed. The process starts by contacting us to identify your interest in adopting a dog.

To inquire about adopting a dog, please send an e-mail naming the dog of interest to rescue@keshetkennels.com or call 613-850-6212.

What do I get when I adopt a dog from your rescue?

All of our rescues live on-site, giving us the opportunity to really get to know the dogs.

  • All our dogs are fully vetted: they are fixed, chipped and up to date on all their shots and seasonal meds, if applicable.
  • Our dogs have basic obedience.
  • There is, of course, an adoption process. Our priority is to provide each of our dogs with the tools for success in an environment they can thrive. To that end, our adoption process, which is based on the concept of achieving 5 fundamental milestones, involves a commitment of time from potential adopters and will result in multiple trips to our facilities at your expense.
  • In the event of a suitable pairing, there is an adoption fee of $500 + tax.

For more information review our Adoption Process.
